The dog always gets a stocking, but the budget for it is usually an afterthought once everyone else is sorted. Under £5 is exactly the right amount for a filler that gets sniffed, chewed and forgotten about by Boxing Day, so there is no reason to spend more on something that will not survive the first ten minutes.

How to choose stocking fillers for dogs
- Go for treats they will finish in one sitting. Small jerky and training treat packs are ideal pocket-money fillers that will not sit around.
- Pick a toy that survives one Christmas Day. A squeaky carrot or parsnip toy is cheap enough that it does not matter if it gets destroyed by teatime.
- Add something for after dinner. A small tin of festive dinner or a dental chew gives the dog its own thing to open once everyone else has finished.
- Check the ingredients if your dog has a sensitive stomach. Natural treat brands tend to list fewer, simpler ingredients than supermarket own-label ones.
